I just wanted to put this up here to 1) allow my fellow non-union actors/actresses out there a bit of warning and 2) make sure if I see it (or if you see it happening) say something.
A week or so ago TheatreWorks had an open call audition. Now you know that people are going to go to that...come on now. And let's face it, people are crazy and will be there at 4 or 5 in the morning (sometimes earlier) to be one of the first in the room. And of course, if they're smart, they'll go home until 9 or so and then come back, refreshed and a little more rested, right??? Well, I can't be there at 5am. Being well rested and feeling refreshed means more to me then getting up before the birds....and Aimee and Jackie agree (my audition buddies for those of you who don't know). Anyway, the three of us get to these auditions early but not too late (that means by like 7 or 8am the latest). This one Aimee and I were to be there around 7-7:30ish. Jackie couldn't make it that day. Well I just got out of the subway and I get a call from Aimee (who was already there and signed me in). She left me a message and said, "They're going through the list right now and putting it on the official list. And if you're not here they skip you." The message was left at 7:30 and when I got it, it was about 7:40 and I was around the block. By the time I got up there it was 7:50 or so and there was an alternate list being done. And behind the table was this kid. He said, "The official list if filled up and there's an alternate list going." I was number 32 or something on this thing. But I just had a vibe from this kid. I couldn't figure out what it was. So I join Aimee and we're just waiting. Finally, around 9:30 or so the casting director and monitors for TheatreWorks come. You might be asking yoursefl, "So what was that kid doing there at the table?" GOOD POINT!!!! Apparently he was #2 on the official list and it was HE who decided to go through the unofficial list and if you weren't there, whoops, you're off. So an actor, who had NO AFFILIATION with TheatreWorks whatsoever, decided that he wouldn't honor the unofficial list (the one that (you know) someone came in at 5am to sign and probably was either at other places signing in, in the bathroom, or at home getting ready thinking they were in and didn't have to be there until 9:30 (because it's good to be early...) thus screwing other actors. First off, it's bad enough that we don't have any union representation. Because if we did, that crap wouldn't have been acceptable. But there was no one we could say anything to. Who would really care and nothing could be done. So this kid took it upon himself. I just want to warn you all out there that this ridiculous behavior does happen. And you know we all acknowledge and respect the unofficial list our fellow actors have done. So the fact that this loser decided to do what he wanted to do is a pretty low blow and pathetic. And unfortunately I didn't put 2 and 2 together until I was about 7 out of 8 1/2 hours of WAITING to get in (yup...I would have been done by noon but since this kid decided to do what he did I didn't get out until 4:15pm....). And had I realized it earlier and/or had I been there when he decided to do this, I would have said something. That's not right. And I hope for all of you, if you witness this, that you SAY SOMETHING!!!! Especially if the person has no AFFILIATION with the theatre company whatsoever. It's not right...and you all know that. So speak up. Remember....What goes around comes around....Karma will bite you in the butt.
